Leo Yost Jr.

Leo Yost, Jr., known to friends as Butch, passed in the arms of his daughter on September 15, 2021 after a hard fought battle following heart surgery last December.

A true Pittsburgh Dad, Butch loved the Pittsburgh Steelers (except when he was mad at them for not running the ball more, for not blitzing on every down, or for playing prevent defense, when we weren’t up by that much). He owned several pairs of New Balances, all with varying degrees of grass stains from maintaining his lawn, of which he was always so proud. He had a phrase for every situation – Something bad happened? “It is what it is, deal with it.” A project was usually “good enough for government work” and the difficulty of a project was measured in the number of swear words needed to complete it. God forbid you stub a toe in his presence, he would say, “if you had shoes on, that wouldn’t have happened.”

Butch loved going to see his daughter and son-in-law play music at area venues. He played in a band in his younger days, too, and had an extensive guitar collection. He was hard to get out of the house, but always the life of the party when he did. Most days, he could be found “putzing in the garage” or drinking a Yuengling on the wooden swing he built in the back yard. He loved his wife, daughter, and son-in-law fiercely. He will greatly be missed by all three, plus by his devoted pup Cooper.

The family would like to extend sincere thanks to all who helped this last year, from the nurses at St. Clair Hospital and at AGH, to his much loved home Heathcare nurse LaShae Jones, to the caring pharmacist (Eric) at the Finleyville Giant Eagle, to their wonderful neighbors Michelle and Vince.

Butch is preceded in death by a brother, Louis Surace, a sister Joanne Elkanich, his mother and father Anne and Leo Yost, Sr. He is survived by his wife Janice Yost and daughter Leigh-Anne DeFelice and “I finally got my boy” son-in-law Zachary DeFelice, a brother Vincent Surace (Luann), and sisters Emily Kroboth and Sandra Binlein. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
