Carol Day Smith, 91, of McMurray, PA, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2025.

Born in Berwyn, IL, to Theodore and Caroline Habley, Carol graduated from Morton East High School in 1950 and went on to earn her nursing degree from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in 1954. She dedicated over four decades to caring for others as an ICU nurse, retiring from Canonsburg General Hospital in 1996.

In retirement, Carol and her husband Tom embraced a life of adventure, traveling the world with excitement. Their journeys took them from sailing the British Virgin Islands to exploring Prague, Paris, London, Morocco, and Alaska, among many other destinations. With their welcoming spirits, they somehow always managed to receive invitations to strangers’ weddings along the way.

Carol was known for her competitive spirit in Old Maid and Crazy 8’s, never backing down from a challenge from the grandchildren. As a devoted “Swim Mom,” she was a fixture at 5 a.m. carpools, weekend swim meets, and away competitions, cheering on her children with unwavering enthusiasm.

Above all, Carol was the heart of her home—a wonderful mother, wife, grandmother, and the ultimate hostess who brought people together for countless memorable gatherings. She was a faithful servant and longtime member of Center Presbyterian Church in McMurray.

Carol is survived by her children Brian (Lindae) Day, Lee Ann Sardo, and Brad (Kelly) Day; stepsons Tom Smith and Frank (Amy) Smith; twelve grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and her brother Tom Habley.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 38 years, Thomas Smith; her brother David Habley; and her sister Georgene Kriz.

A memorial service will be held on December 6, 2025 at 10 a.m. at Center Presbyterian Church in McMurray.

Im so glad i visited her in Strabane. She really enjoyed reminising about coworkers at CGH as we looked at an album that the nurses compiled over the years. I will miss her.

I cannot say enough about the gentleness and caring of Tom and Carol Smith. When my father was hospitalized before his death, Tom and Carol visited him in the hospital and comforted my mother and my sister with the touches they had learned by attending Center Presbyterian Church with my parents and by volunteering to work with them in my father's business. Tom worked alongside my mother to help and give her executive guidance once my father passed. He and I delivered parts to customers together and he gave me valuable advance that helped me care for and support my mother Annabelle. He and Carol were unforgettable for their love and passion for others and for each other. Their Christmas card came back this year, causing me to go looking for perhaps a new address. I'm sad to hear they are gone, and shall miss them and hold my visions of their role in my life dear. My love to all of you.
