Charlie was a good friend of my parents, Bob and Eloise Ruffing. They had great times with him hiking out west especially in the draw of the buckskin. Mom enjoyed botanizing and discussing plants with Charlie. Together they discovered a patch of Hartford fern. To us kids, Charlie was an inspiration on how to live a life simply, creatively and with adventure a constant companion. Jenny Ruffing Begin, Maine

Charlie was always fun on a long hike. One in particular stands out in my memory -- a 7-day backpack across the back ridge of the Tetons. Charlie was with us for the first four days but then just peeled off to the west into Idaho because he had a date to explore a cave to the southwest of us.
