David Hood Monroe, age 66, passed away on April 6, 2026, at his residence in Brackenridge, Pennsylvania.

He was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin and embraced life as a free spirit connected to nature. He had a giving heart and could make friends across all walks of life. He will be dearly missed by those who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Masten Monroe, and mother, Martha Madred Monroe Boyer.

He is survived by his daughter, Madeleine Monroe, his son, Alexander Monroe, as well as his four siblings, Marguerite Pivarnik, Dr. Thomas Monroe, Madred Slaker, and Joseph Monroe.

David received a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from the University of Virginia, followed by a master’s degree in Public Health and a doctorate degree in Toxicology from the University of Washington. It was there that he met his former wife and started a family. He spent his early career as a private consultant before joining the EPA as an environmental toxicologist.

David was an avid fisherman with a deep appreciation for nature. As an outdoorsman, he climbed Mt Rainier, kayaked the Northwest, Alaska, and the Grand Canyon. He also enjoyed hiking and mountain climbing with friends in the northern U.S. and Canada. As a music lover he followed concert tours of the Grateful Dead and others.

In accordance with his wishes, his ashes will be scattered along the West Coast, a place he dearly loved.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate to Habitat for Humanity to honor his memory. David volunteered with the organization during his years in North Carolina.

Our sympathies to your family on the loss of Dave. My mother lives across the street and said he would chat it up with her while she sat on the stoop of her porch. She said he was most interesting, very knowledgeable, and polite.
