Debbie Melone Hanes, 68, of Hickory, PA and formerly of Pittsburgh, died on September 14, 2024. She was born on June 17, 1956, the daughter of Joanne Seibel Melone and the late Floyd C. Melone of Washington, PA.

Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband Robert K. (Bob) Hanes; two bonus daughters, Tammy Hanes Smith and Jody Hanes Charneicki (along with husband Brian); a sister Christy Melone Paddick; and four nieces: Lauren Paddick, Jordan Paddick, Eden Melone, and Isabella (Bella) Hudgkin, who made her home with Debbie and Bob.

Ms. Hanes was preceded in death by a sister, Lisa Anne Melone, and her brother, Mark Melone.

She attended South Hills Bible Chapel and was previously a member of Cecil Alliance Church.

Ms. Hanes earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Geneva College and received the Distinguished Service Award from Geneva as an alumna. She also earned a master’s degree in communications from Duquesne University.

Her career included positions in marketing communications, and she wrote for and promoted a variety of clients. In 1993, she co-founded Miller-Melone Communication and Design along with her business partner and friend, Mary-Peg Miller. She later founded Melone Marketing Communications and worked as an adjunct professor at Waynesburg College and Geneva College.

Ms. Hanes often laughed that she was the only one in her immediate family never to have won an athletic trophy and instead pointed to the award pen set she received as a participant in the Washington County spelling bee in 1968, representing Patten School. Her mother spent endless hours testing Debbie on the official spelling bee word list, which likely inspired Debbie’s interest in language, leading her to a career that she enjoyed for many years.

Services will be held at a later date. All arrangements were entrusted to Pittsburgh Cremation and Funeral Care.

To have known Deb was a blessing. I will forever remember her infectious smile which lit up a room. She was kind and genuine and ever so funny. During the Melone Marketing Communication days, she and I briefly shared an office while she worked on projects for our company - during that time she made me laugh as she told stories of her new life "on the farm". Her love of Bob and family was so evident. May memories of her sustain her loved ones and may she forever rest in peace.

The world's light has dimmed with the passing of my dear friend, Debbie. Debbie's life was that of a selfless woman...always serving instead of being served. She was the light of those of us fortunate to know her. She lived a life of faith and love and endurance...and she inspired me to always do better. I will miss her and her sweetness and her guiding light. May the choir of angels and saints lift her up to eternal Paradise where there is peace and love.

Debbie was my best friend for life we knew each other from the first grade! She and I used to walk down Country Club Rad to meet each other before we could drive a car. We were in classes together at Patton elementary school, girl scouts, 4H with sewing and cooking, and in high school we were in the drill team, the chorus, and the Campus Life Singers. More recently I had visited Debbie and Bob with Bella during our Trinity class reunion about 15 years ago and spent time remembering the past with Debbie and Terry Walton Lemley. When I came to town to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Steel Town Corvette club’s existence, she was there with me. We toured the entire area, including the site of the county fair and Trinity high school. We kept in contact all of these years, our entire life. She continues to influence us in a positive way. Terry Walton Lemley and I talked for 2 hours after no communication for more than 15 years. Debbie is in heaven with our Lord and is smiling down on all of us. She was a wonderful inspiration and a great friend and will be severely missed. My condolences go out to her husband Bob Haines, her niece/adopted daughter Bella and her mother Mrs. Melone. Please let me know if I can help in any way!!!

Although I had not seen Debbie in many years, I remember how kind she was .to me in my freshman year at Geneva. My condolences to Bob who I am sure is heartbroken by her passing.
