Donald Ray Van Metre, of Washington PA, died November 10, 2022 in Washington PA, in the Donnell House. He was born March 5, 1949 in Inglewood, CA, the son of the late William and Lulu Van Metre.

Don was a beautiful combination of contradictions. He was an adventurous homebody who traveled far, and an imposing presence with a heart of gold. He was the true definition of a renaissance man and equally enjoyed fixing cars, painting, writing poetry, and distributing his version of wisdom.

Don understood the value of making time for riddles, sending flowers, and teaching the kids the meaning of redshirts.

Society often defines a “great man” as one who led a grand movement, served in high office, or created some significant invention. Don made the world a better place on a personal, familial level; he is one who loved his wife deeply, was proud of his children, and created a legacy of creativity, kindness, and empathy for others. At that level, Don Van Metre was a great man, who in life was greatly loved and in death will be greatly missed.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, sister Cosella Cuddy, and son Derek Van Metre. He is survived by his loving wife Bonnie, children Sheila Van Metre, Amy Leone Salisbury, Dustin Van Metre, eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, brother John Van Metre, and sister Sue Rizco, all of whom are forever grateful for having him in their lives.
