E. William Matthews, 73, of Gibsonia, formerly of Allison Park and raised in Munhall, passed away on Friday, April 10, 2026, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on August 16, 1952, in Pittsburgh.

He was the beloved son of the late Edward and Virginia Matthews.

A proud alumnus of Thiel College and a member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, Bill remained actively involved with the college throughout his life. He served on the Alumni Association Board of Directors and numerous committees. In 2025, he was honored with the Service to Thiel Award in recognition of his many contributions to the university and its community.

Bill was an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, where he chaired the finance committee for many years.

An Eagle Scout, Bill maintained a lifelong commitment to the Boy Scouts of America. He served on the leadership committee of Troop 17 in Allison Park and was an influential mentor to generations of young Scouts. He was also deeply involved in youth sports, coaching Hampton Soccer and Baseball, and supporting Hampton Wrestling, including overseeing the Hampton Dog Duals for more than ten years.

Above all, Bill treasured his family and friends, forming lifelong bonds with all who knew him. He and Diane shared more than 51 years of marriage. He was a devoted father to his twins and took great pride in their activities and accomplishments. Bill enjoyed traveling the world with his wife and best friends, Jim and Karen Listak. Dear Diane, You and Bill have been such valued and respected members of this wonderful community of ours. We are all learning to navigate the challenges of aging but undue burdens have been placed on both of you. You have carried them with grace and honor! Bill has earned his rest and you must take time to rest as well. There is not a thing that any of us here would not do for you. Peace and love to you, Jo Vrana

Bill was an amazing neighbor and friend. We feel so fortunate that we were able to get to know Bill, and the Matthews family once we moved to Bristol Court. Always one for a laugh and a beer. He will be missed. He made this world a better place.

Like Shel, I have known Bill for just the past few years while living in TOA Richland, but it was obvious from the very beginning that he was a special human being, the kind our world seems sorely lacking. He was always kind, positive, respectful, a perfect gentleman who seemed to care about everyone he met. He made me feel like a friend from the first time we met, always smiling and helpful. I will never forget how, when Diane hosted the TOA cooking club, he was always there to refill an empty glass or empty plate, share his wide spectrum of interests, and inquire about yours, anything to make visitors feel at home. An excellent golfer, he nevertheless was very patient when we once shared the same foursome and I demonstrated my Charles-Barkleyesque total ineptitude, providing tips and advice to improve my game. Greatly saddened by his premature departure, I am nevertheless grateful for having known him, and wish Diane and the rest of his family peace and healing in this time of their great loss.

Bill and Diane welcomed me into the Fish Club back in 2022. I was going through a lot of enormous changes, and the joy of a regular social outing was exciting and refreshing. Bill’s smile and all-encompassing kindness still keep me warm to this day. Diane, I’m sending you my love and keeping you in my thoughts. I feel so grateful to carry Bill in my memories and my heart.

Billy was the kind of guy would light up the room when he came in. That smile and positive attitude was what Billy made him. The fraternity brothers, Delta Sigma Phi, at Thiel were a part of his life. He was a freshman and I was a senior at Thiel. So I didn’t get to know Billy during those years, but the last 8 years we connected through golfing and Sigma Beers in the Pittsburgh area. It was my pleasure to get to know him. He will be missed.
