Frederick E. Word was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 30, 1958.  He was the son of the late Calvin and Dorothy Word –their only child.  After the untimely passing of his mother, his father eventually met and married Juanita Word on September 9, 1989 (she became his mother figure).  Without hesitation, Juanita opened her heart and two families into one by welcoming Frederick.  Frederick was a blessing to Juanita because he was the son she never had. Frederick and Juanita shared a mother/son loving bond for 34 years.  With the union of Calvin and Juanita, Frederick inherited three sisters (Lorraine, Tishawn and Lakesha of which they shared a unique and loving family bond along with his nieces and nephews he adored.

He graduated from Kenwood High School (1976) in Chicago, IL and received a degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana – Champaign, Illinois (1981).  Frederick eventually found his niche in the insurance field and proudly dedicated several years to that line of business.  He was employed at the University of Pittsburg Medical Center where he developed and nurtured meaningful working relationships and beyond.

Frederick was an avid golfer, who didn’t mind walking the full golf course.  Fun and loyal friend, trustworthy and dependable colleague, lover of sports (die-hard Steelers fan), regular at Primanti’s Restaurant and Bar, dedicated and fun-loving son, brother and uncle to his family.

Frederick will be lovingly remembered by Juanita Word; his sisters Lorraine (Alfonso) Gorham-Ryant, Tishawn Davidson, and Lakesha McDurfee; uncles Y.C. Word, Herman Word, and Rev. William Lee Word. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Family and friends will be received on Friday, January 20, 2023, from 3:00pm until the time of the memorial service at 5:00pm at Pittsburgh Cremation & Funeral Care, 5405 Steubenville Pike, Robinson Township, PA 15136 (412) 787-1800.

The Family of Frederick would like to express our heartfelt thank you(s) to University of Pennsylvania Medical Center colleagues, Rev. Bernard Marable, Primanti’s Restaurant and Bar, and Frederick’s many friends and colleagues for their condolences and support.

In Lieu of Flowers Grandmommy’s Heart is a non-profit that supports and advocates for the health, wellness, care, and concerns of aging adults.  This organization is special to Frederick because it was founded and built on the legacy of Reverend Doctor Lorraine Johnson whom he affectionately called – “Grandmommy.”

Fred was a wonderful leader of our Allegheny Chapter of CPCU. I enjoyed playing golf and working with him at Chapter events. He was always in such good humor. He will be truly missed.
