Despite being a woman who did everything right, Gillian Mary Bauman left this world on January 14, 2025 at the age of 82 (after a short and vicious battle with cancer). Born on October 11, 1942 in Liverpool England, she was the daughter of the late James Gordan and Ada Pearce. She was old enough to have experienced the blitz attacks during World War 2 growing up in Liverpool and still had difficult dreams about those moments.

Gill leaves behind her devoted husband of 60 years, Robert Bauman, Ed.D, two loving children, Kathy (Geher) and Kelly (Marshall) Siegel, and her four adored grandchildren, Meredith, Megan, Christopher, and Andrew as well as her nephew Jeffrey Pearce and his family. She also leaves behind many wonderful friends; she was an active member of the Hancock Women’s Group in Hancock, Maine. The “sole sisters” provided incredible support and friendship to Gill during her many happy summers at her home in Maine.

Gill was a preschool teacher for special needs children and offered education and kindness to many children and families over the years. This career choice was a very difficult job; she was praised for her professionalism and compassion by everyone who saw her at work in her classroom. She was also able to use her salary from this job to help pay for her children’s and grandchildren’s educations.

She also had a love of travel and she and Bob were fortunate to have travelled to many places over their long marriage, including France, England, Ireland Italy, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, the Caribbean (when she and Bob were younger) and her native country of Wales. Recently, she recently reflected on her many trips to France and her love of the French countryside and lilac fields. When she wasn’t travelling, she could be found reading or playing one of her many word games on her phone. She was a tough competitor in Words with Friends and Scrabble!

She also spent a great time of time in her kitchen cooking delicious meals which she loved to do (and her family enjoyed very much). Most of these meals came from her experiences in other countries; there was no food she wouldn’t attempt to cook or eat!

Gill and Bob were great animal lovers and shared their life with many wonderful dogs of different breeds, including basset hounds, Great Pyrenees, Newfoundlands, and a golden retriever. There were very few of the 60 years of her long marriage where a dog (or two) was not living in (or welcomed into) their home. Both trouble and love came from this interest.

Gillian’s generosity and warmth touched everyone she met. She was a friend, a mentor, and a confidante, offering her wisdom, compassion, and a listening ear. She had a unique ability to make others feel seen and valued, leaving a lasting impression on those lucky enough to cross her path.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the APSCA to honor her lifelong love of dogs.

Memorial gatherings are being planned in Pittsburgh and Hancock, Maine. Details will be shared when arrangements have been made.

I think about you quite a lot, Gill. I miss when we would get together for game nights. I miss just chatting with you. You always were so fascinating to talk to and I miss having you there in Pittsburgh to while away an evening on occasion. I'm so sorry we never did get up to Maine to visit you and Bob there. I'm certain it would have been a grand time. I miss Bob, too, not being across the street anymore. Nobody to pop over and say hello to there anymore. I hope he is doing well in New York. Much love and peace to Bob and to all the kids and grandkids. They are surely feeling the sting of your absence at Christmas this year. I hope everyone shares plenty of happy memories of you for Christmas.
