Harriett (Gonter) Johnson

Harriett (Gonter) Johnson, age 80, of Washington PA passed away peacefully at home on April 2, 2022.

Born on December 14, 1941, she was a daughter of the late Harry E. J. and Agnes (Breeden) Gonter.

Loving mother of Cheryl (Ed) McFarland of Pittsburgh, PA, Dana (Jamie) Trainor of Canonsburg, PA, and Tim (Jennifer) Johnson of Charlotte, NC. Cherished grandmother to Jake & Clare Trainor, Katherine & Ryan McFarland, Tim, Bridget, Liam & Natalie Johnson, and beloved aunt to numerous nieces and nephews.

Harriett was preceded in death by her sister Janice (Al) Jarek of York, PA.

Harriett was a 1959 Graduate of Tridelphia High School and attended Wittenberg University and California University of Pennsylvania.  She married Robert Johnson in 1961.  She was employed by Trinity Area School District from 1976 until 2004.

Harriett was fiercely independent, loved to travel and enjoyed adventures with her friends and family. She enjoyed trips to Europe, traveling the United States, including frequent trips to Hilton Head Island, and cruises to Alaska and Hawaii.  From taking three young children on vacation by herself, to a Segway tour of Pittsburgh, experiencing her grandchildren’s activities, college visits and frequent outdoor hikes, among many other outings, we could always count on her to join in adventures with energy and joy   She was an avid supporter of the Pittsburgh Symphony and Pittsburgh Musical Theater, frequently attending performances with friends and on her own.

She was a longtime volunteer with Meals on Wheels.  An active member of The Church of the Covenant, Harriett was a Deacon, serving on various committees, including the Associate Pastor Nominating Committee, Blessings in a Backpack, Monday Readers, and was a Carnahan Library volunteer.  She cherished her time with the Grandma’s Club.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9 in the Church of the Covenant with Reverend Scott Shetter officiating. Harriett will be interred in a private ceremony in Greenwood Cemetery in Wheeling, WV.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Covenant, 267 East Beau Street, Washington, PA 15201.
