Irene Mossman “Nini” Parmly

1930-2026

Age: 95

Irene Mossman “Nini” Parmly passed peacefully into glory, ‘full of years,’ on February 7, 2026.  She was in her ninety-sixth year, residing in Wampum, Pennsylvania.

Born in Holyoke, Massachusetts to the late Bruce Morier Mossman and Irene Cook Mossman on July 31, 1930, Nini’s childhood led through Texas and back to her native New England and Melrose, and then South Hadley, Massachusetts.

Nini has been reunited, in the glory of her Savior, with her dear brother Frederick Mossman and her devoted husband, O.W. “Tut” Parmly (2017)  She leaves behind a beloved sister-in-law, Janet Mossman, four children and their families:  Bruce Wolcott (Paula King) Parmly of Jacksonville, Florida;  Susann (Kevin) Smith (Thomas Lyon) of Orem, Utah;  Marcella (Jonathon) Landell of Wampum, Pennsylvania; Carrie (Kent) Irish of Raleigh, North Carolina; and an amazing legacy of 22 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Nini was a graduate of Green Mountain College in clothing retail and marketing, but in her last year met O. Wolcott “Tut” Parmly through a blind date set up by her college roommate.  They were soon engaged and married in Holyoke, Massachusetts, July 1950.  Now an ‘army wife’ they began married life in Panama (CZ) where Bruce was born.  From there the family grew through moves to Oklahoma (Susann), Georgia, Kentucky (Marcella), and finally, leaving the Army behind, in Burlington, Vermont (Carrie).  A move to the country – though declared “not far enough” by Nini, found them settled in Richmond. Vermont.  For most of the following fifty years Nini was active in town and church life. From volunteering at the Round Church, teaching Sunday School, helping with chicken potpie dinners, serving with the Philanthropic Society, supporting Tut’s political campaigns, and helping start the Faith EFC church above the storefronts, she took an active interest in the “goings on” in and beyond town.

Nini lived and loved an active life, often outside in her beautiful flower beds, walking a succession of Schnauzers, or playing tennis -all into her eighties! She loved to knit, creating handmade Christmas stockings, sweaters, and learning to smock dresses for her granddaughters. She also was an active supporter of her children and grandchildren’s interests, perhaps found in the lodge at Cochran’s or Madonna for ski races, in the barns and fields where the horse shows were, watching ballet productions, attending concerts, or Stunt Night performances.  For years she worked in the bowels of Mary Fletcher Hospital as a telephone operator to help support their hobbies.  A voracious reader of sound theology, Nini enjoyed being the church librarian at Jericho Congregational Church as well as attending annual conferences and supporting ministries like Ligonier and Grace to You.

All who knew Nini could recognize her spunky, native New England hardiness.  She was generous, firm in her convictions, and quick to serve others.  Most importantly, she now sees the things of which she hoped for with assurance on this earth, the presence of her God and Savior whose righteousness alone secured her salvation.  To God alone be the glory!

A memorial service will take place on June 13, 2026 at 11:00 am at First Congregational Church of South Hadley, 1 Church St. #1, South Hadley, MA 01075, with interment following immediately after.

An elevator is accesible from both the Church St. and Lower Park St. entrances.

Please text 919-601-0321 with your name and number in party if you would like to participate.  We look forward to being together to remember both Tut and Irene as they will be simultaneously interred that day in a family plot.  Grace and peace to you in our Lord, Jesus Christ.
