James David Cowie, Sr., 82 of Washington, PA, died at home on August 3, 2026.

Jim was born August 3, 1944 in Punxsutawney, PA, a son of the late James and Nellie (Reeseman) Cowie. Mr. Cowie graduated from Mapletown High School in 1962 and attended Pennsylvania State University. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on July 9, 1965, attended Ft. Knox, Kentucky for basic training, and attended Ft. Gordon, Georgia for AIT training. He attended Ft. Meyer, Virginia in honor guard company, Company E. He saw action in Vietnam as a squad leader, SGT-E-5. He served with the 1st Calvary Division base in An Khe, Vietnam, C-2. He was awarded the Purple Heeart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, and received various Vietnam Campaign Medals. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army June 6, 1967. He served in the Paang and received a direct commission as 2nd Lieutenant in 1975. He resigned his commission as 1st Lieutenant in 1983.

Mr. Cowie worked at C&P Telephonee Co., Murrysville Telephone Co., and Equitrans L.P. before retiring May 2006 after 37 years.

On March 11, 1998 he married Cynthia J. Burgh Cowie who survives. Also surviving are two sisters: Helen Cowie Snyder of Beallsville, PA and Karen Cowie (Larry) Tinkey of Indian Head, SC; a son James Cowie (Lori) of Greensboro, PA; a granddaughter Wyletta Cowie (Matthew Moorman) of Whitehall, PA; a daughter Teresa Cowie of Hopwood, PA; a daughter Julia (Jaymie) Murphy of Aliso Viejo, CA; grandchildren Sierra, Whitney, and Kai Murphy of Aliso Viejo, CA; a son Nathan Caldwell (Taylor) of Washington, PA; and granddaughters Addison and Sonnie Caldwell of Washington, PA. Deceased are a sister Mary Louise Cowie, a brother Thomas Eugene Cowie, and brother-in-law Wilson Snyder.

His loved ones would like to thank the VA of Pittsburgh Washington Clinic, Amedisys Hospice, and his loving caretaker Jessica Freeman for the compassionate care given to James.

Friends will be received on Friday, August 7, 2026 from 1:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Pittsburgh Cremation & Funeral Care, 3287 Washington Road, McMurray, PA 15317. Everyone will meet on Saturday, August 8th at Waterdam Church, 208 Gallery Road, Canonsburg, PA 15317, from 10:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jim’s name may be made to Waterdam Church. Burial with military honors will take place on Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at 1:30 pm at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville, PA.
