James “Jim” John McCaffrey

James “Jim” John McCaffrey, 72, of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 11, 2026, at Mercy Hospital.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Jim followed in the footsteps of his father and brother as a driver for the Pittsburgh Press. His career was cut short after a knee injury that led to multiple surgeries, but his spirit and generosity never wavered. Known for his kindness, big heart, and willingness to help anyone in need, Jim was a great listener, a thoughtful problem solver, and a man whose laughter — paired with his unforgettable smile — could light up any room.

In his younger years, Jim played guitar in a band, and his passion for music stayed with him throughout his life. Proud of his Pittsburgh roots, he was a loyal Pittsburgh Steelers fan who faithfully supported his team every season. Before a knee injury limited his mobility, Jim enjoyed golfing and swimming, but he later discovered a new passion in coaching his granddaughter’s softball team. For more than a decade, he dedicated himself to mentoring young athletes, sharing not only his knowledge of the game but also his encouragement and kindness, leaving a lasting impact on both the players and the community.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, John “Irish” and Nelly McCaffrey. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Nancy; his children, Casey (Mike), Missy (Clint), and Mike; grandchildren Roman, Kailin, Jacob, Jordan, and Khloe; great-grandchildren Carter and Madeline; and siblings Jacqueline (the late Lefty) Labbett and John (Renee) McCaffrey; also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

A funeral service for friends and family will be held at Pittsburgh Cremation & Funeral Care, 5405 Steubenville Pike, Pittsburgh, PA, on May 22, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Paws Across America in Jim’s memory.

Jim’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and generosity. His family and friends will forever cherish the memories of his warm heart, his passion for coaching, and the way he made everyone feel valued.
