James P. Marx

James Paul Marx, 73, of Finleyville, PA, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on June 10, 2026.

Born on May 31, 1953, in Scranton, PA, Jim was the beloved son of the late John and Rosemary Marx. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Pat Marx.

To say that Jim enjoyed running and cycling would be an understatement. An avid athlete throughout his life, he completed numerous marathons, including the prestigious Boston Marathon, and participated in multiple triathlons. His determination, discipline, and love of competition inspired those around him.

Following a successful career with Bell Atlantic, Jim was fortunate to retire at age 49, allowing him and Barb to embrace a new chapter filled with adventure and togetherness. They spent many years traveling the country and enjoying life to the fullest. Jim found great happiness in spending several months each year in Florida with his beloved wife, Barb, soaking in the warm weather, sharing precious time together, and watching the beautiful sunsets that he loved so much.

For the past 15 years, Jim fought a courageous battle with ALS with extraordinary grace, strength, and resilience. Despite the challenges he faced, he remained the same kind, selfless, and positive man that everyone knew and loved. He never allowed his illness to define him. Instead, he continued to put his family first, offering unwavering love, encouragement, and support to those around him. His smile, gentle spirit, and ability to find joy in life’s simplest moments were a source of inspiration to all who knew him. Through every hardship, Jim’s faith, courage, and enduring love for his family shone brightly.

Above all else, Jim treasured his family. He found his greatest happiness in the company of those he loved, whether gathered around the dinner table, enjoying family vacations, or taking walks with his precious grandchildren. His quiet strength, unwavering devotion, generous heart, and unconditional love will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Barb Marx; his loving children, Brandon (Kim) Marx, Rylan (Lyndsay) Marx, and Mallory (Brendan) Madden; and his adored grandchildren, Ryder, Carson, Luca, Livia, Alec, Mireya, Dax, and Merric. He is also survived by his siblings, Jack (Kathy) Marx, Maureen (Tim) Lavelle, Nancy Marx, and Marybeth (Jerome) Smith; his sister-in-law, AnnMarie Marx; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Jim’s legacy is one of perseverance, humility, kindness, and love. He taught those around him how to face adversity with dignity and how to live a life centered on faith, family, and compassion. Though he will be profoundly missed, the example he set and the love he shared will remain in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
