James “Pap” Caristo, age 90, of Collier Township, formerly of Moon Run, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on November 2, 1933, he was the son of the late Maria “Nani” and Giovanni “Papu” Caristo. He enlisted in the Air Force after high school. He worked for decades at Frank Bryan’s Concrete Company. He retired early to be the devoted caregiver for his wife and her medical needs, for many years.

Beloved husband of the late Dorothy “Dot” (Turnbull) Caristo. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Catherine, Frank, Mickey, Mike, Carmela, John, and Albert. Loving father of Tammy (Ed) Caristo. Grandfather of Jamie (DJ) Mohr, Scotty (Lauren) Whitfield, and Hannah Caristo. Great-grandfather of Gianna and Jocelyn Mohr. He is also survived by his brothers, Pete and Tony Caristo and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Pap was a faithful Christian, selfless man, father figure to many, helper to all, honorable to his word, active listener, unwaveringly loyal, avid problem-solver, contagious smiler, quick witted, jack of all trades, and loved by everyone who met him.

Through the years, Pap enjoyed going to breakfast at 7:00 am every Tuesday, tinkering in his workshop, golfing with his relatives, bowling in a family league, training his dogs, coaching baseball players, named the best present guesser, devoted hobby photographer, Air Force baseball player, dedicated gardener, coin ring maker, school project architect, most fun-loving babysitter, and above all was the first to offer help to anyone in need.

Pap could always be spotted wearing suspenders and never went without a hanky. He always had cash in his wallet and a ball cap on his head. Pap looked forward to having KFC coleslaw, Tom Tucker mint ginger ale, root beer, and never missed an after church lunch with his family. Pap was the neighborhood greeter from his driveway or on his swing, waving to people as they drove by.
He was more than a Pap to his grandchildren. He filled in as their father, and never missed any practice, game, or important event in their lives. Some would say he is one of the most irreplaceable men to ever exist. Pap will forever be missed!!!
Friends and family will be received on Monday, August 12, 2024, from 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm, with a blessing service and Honor Guard following at 6:00 pm at Pittsburgh Cremation & Funeral Care, 5405 Steubenville Pike, Robinson Township, PA 15136. A Celebration of Life dinner to follow at Crossroads Church, 1000 Crossroads Dr., Oakdale, PA 15071. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation at t2t.org.
