James Stephen Mitterer, 80, of Bethel Park passed away early Thursday, Jan. 20, 2022, at St. Clair Hospital, after a long battle withcancer.  James was born October 2, 1941, in Pittsburgh, just two months before the U.S. would enter Word War II.  He was raised by his parents, Stephen and Catherine, on Dengler Street, Mt. Oliver, alongside his brother and 6 sisters.  After high school, James turned his love of motor repair into a 22 – year career with the Air Force, obtaining the rank, Chief Master Sergeant, before his retirement in 1981.He then settled his family in the South Hills and began his career with USAir in aircraft maintenance.  As a 20-year season ticket holder, James could be found at Heinz Field many Saturdays rooting for his Pitt Panthers. He also was an avid remodeler, constantly working on and updating their home of 40 years. There was nothing he couldn’t build or fix for his friends and family.  After retiring for good in 2004, James was able to indulge in his true loves, golfing in the South Park over-60 league and traveling with his wife of 58 years, Carol.  He is survived by his wife Carol; son, Marc (Rachel), of Crafton; daughter, Angela (Mark) Charles; and grandson, Jacob Charles, of Venetia.

At Jim’s request there is no viewing. He will be laid to rest at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies in a small military ceremony at a later date.
