Joan S. Johnston, 79, of Bethel Park, PA, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2026.
Born on May 8, 1947, in LaGrange, Georgia, Joan was the cherished daughter of the late Jack and Avlona Smith.
Joan lived a life rooted in faith, service, and love for her family and community. A devoted member of Christ United Methodist Church in Bethel Park, she faithfully led the church’s altar guild and generously gave her time through countless volunteer efforts over the years. Whether serving her church or helping others, Joan found joy in making a difference and quietly touched the lives of many. Her working career included positions in recruiting, office administration, and personnel, as well as teaching.
She also enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. Joan was an avid reader, a passionate sports fan, and a lifelong supporter of her beloved Georgia Bulldogs. Her Southern roots remained close to her heart, and she never missed an opportunity to cheer on her favorite team.
Above all, Joan treasured her family. She is survived by her beloved husband, Bill; her loving sons, Bill V. Johnston and Brian (Lauren) Johnston; and her cherished grandchildren, Caleb and Brynley, who brought her immeasurable pride and happiness. She is also survived by her sister, Anna (Joseph) Payne; many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family members. In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her twin brother Jack Smith.
Family and friends will be invited to celebrate Joan’s life at a memorial service to be held at Christ United Methodist Church on Saturday, August 22, 2026 at 11:00 am. Inurnment will take place at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in Joan’s name to Christ United Methodist Church, 44 Highland Rd., Bethel Park, PA 15102.
The family would like to thank all those who offered Joan kindness, friendship, and support throughout her life. Her legacy of faith, generosity, and unwavering love for her family will be remembered always.
