JOHN “JED” HAINES, 1932 – 2026

John Alvin “Jed” Haines, 93, died Monday, August 31, 2026, at home.

Mr. Haines was born December 15, 1932, a son of Elsie and Ray Haines of Washington.

Mr. Haines was a graduate of Washington HS and W&J College. He was the oldest person to graduate from W&J, taking 1 course per semester until achieving his degree. He was proud of this accomplishment but wouldn’t permit W&J to publicize it, typical of his character.

Mr Haines was a US Air Force Korean War veteran.

Mr. Haines rose to become chief operator and chemist of PA Water/WEWJA’s treatment plant and a sought-after expert.  He was a fixture in Peters Township and Upper St Clair, driving school bus for 2 generations of students.

Mr. Haines married Ann (Hall) Haines June 1, 1957, who preceded him in death October 31, 2022.

He was devoted to his large extended family.  He had the gift of kindling instant friendships, and treasured his many friends from all walks of life.

Surviving are his son Terry (Laura), and grandchildren Madeleine “Maddie” and John “Jack” of Alexandria, Virginia; sister-in-law Rose Bonazza (Jack) Hall & her children John (Shirley) and Louise (Roger) and their families, all of Canonsburg; brothers-in-law James (Cherie) of West Mifflin and Richard (Margaret) of Lititz; nephews and nieces Sally Haines Tusing, Rebecca (Melvin) Haines Gray, Doug (Marco) Haines, Katy Thompson, and their families.  Predeceasing him were his brothers Jim (1998), Robert (2024), and Richard (2000).

Friends will be received on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, from 5pm until 8pm, at Pittsburgh Cremation and Funeral Care, 3287 Washington Road, McMurray 15317.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 10:00 am at St Benedict the Abbot Catholic Church of St John XXIII Parish, 120 Abington Drive, McMurray, PA.  Interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, McMurray, will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Washington City Mission, of which John was a lifelong supporter. citymission.org
