John C. Maus, age 76, of Forest Hills, PA, after a final goodbye with his daughters, passed peacefully just before the sun rose on Saturday, August 6, 2022. Beloved husband of the late Barbara Maus; loving father of Linda Maus and Laura Maus (Nick Wolfgang); son of the late Edwin and Julia Maus; brother of Bea (Bob) Burns, Bud (Lorraine) Maus, Mary Beth (John) O’Brien, Eileen (the late David) Lebelt, and Alice (John) Blazeck; uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Known and loved equally for his gruff exterior and his charismatic demeanor, John could easily switch between being the life of the party and a cranky but lovable curmudgeon who just wanted some peace and quiet. A lifelong Steelers fan, you knew you were at the right tailgate when you saw the Santa-like figure in his shorts emerge in the middle of a Pittsburgh winter. He enjoyed seeking peace in nature with his furry forever-at-his-side companion Pepper Ann, with Camp Phillips or the beaches of Maryland and Delaware often calling his name. Whether he was passing the chalice at Roland’s or telling stories at the annual 4th of July picnic, you could always count on hearing his laugh reverberate throughout the gathering. He raised two independent “dotters” who he loved fiercely and supported in all their endeavors, even when they drove him crazy. His hobbies ranged from his younger days participating in all forms of athletics to his later years experimenting with grilling techniques on the patio. His girls can’t help but think that, upon reuniting with Barbara and Pepper, John uttered a phrase heard on many a family vacation. “We’re not lost. We’re just on an adventure.” Until we adventure with you again, Papa.

Family and friends will gather on Saturday, August 20, 2022 from 10:00am-12:00pm and 2:00pm-4:00pm at Pittsburgh Cremation and Funeral Care, 5405 Steubenville Pike, Robinson Township, PA 15136, (412) 787-1800. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your local veterans organization or animal shelter.

The world is a little less bright without you Papa Maus—but I’ll be eternally grateful for the amazing daughters you brought into it. You raised and loved the very best people I know—and because of that, I will always carry an imprint of you on my heart.
