John Richard Hughes

John Richard Hughes passed away on Monday, July 13, 2026, following a long-time battle against multiple sclerosis. John was born November 15, 1945 in E. Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio to John E. Hughes and Betty Jayne Pearse Hughes. John was a 1963 graduate of Canon MacMillan High School. John entered the U.S. Air Force in January 1965, serving as an air traffic controller in the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged at the rank of Sargeant in October 1968. John’s earliest career began as a police officer in North Strabane Township, where he forged many lifelong friendships. John spent 23 years working for Joy Manufacturing Co. in Meadowlands, PA. John’s love for finance and investing led him to achieve credentials for insurance sales and he became a Certified Financial Planner for a number of years. He completed his working years with Washington Ford, following his love and appreciation for cars old and new. On May 16, 1992, he married Robin Bricker Hughes, who survives. Also surviving is their daughter, Kristen Taylor Hughes of Canonsburg, PA.

John is survived by a brother, William Hughes of Cleveland, Ohio. Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a sister, Janine and brother Mark.  John is also survived by his in-laws, Donald (Catherine) Frederico and Dr.  Andrew (Sharon) Lucas, as well as many nieces and nephews. The family extends sincere gratitude and appreciation for their kindness, care and expertise to Amedysis Home Health Care, especially Theresa and Lonnie; Amedysis Hospice, especially Lacey, Amy, Etta, Michelle, Madison and Jordan; The Caring Mission, especially Mark Wendel, who provided such wonderful care, along with Rachel and Jessica; and finally, the Veterans Administration, who helped us navigate through the many years of John’s care. A gathering for friends and family will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 at Pittsburgh Cremation & Funeral Care, 3287 Washington Rd., McMurray, PA 15317, with interment immediately following at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, with a tribute from the American Legion Post 175 honor guard. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Fix Ur Cat, 222 Hall Ave., Washington, PA 15301 or Catnip Acres Rescue, 112 Loves Hill Ext., Waynesburg, PA 15370. A catered gathering will be held following the service in the banquet area at the American Legion Post 175, 168 Park Ave., Washington, PA, for anyone who would like to attend.
