Dr. John Steven Cummings, PhD, 84, of Washington, PA, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2026. Born December 30, 1941, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary Cummings.

John received his PhD at Northwestern University in Biology.  He was a dedicated educator for decades at Waynesburg College starting in 1968. During his tenure, was instrumental in starting Waynesburg College’s nursing, marine biology, and athletic training programs.  He held various positions, including biology program director and science division chairman.  He was awarded teacher of the year in 2001.  He enjoyed carpentry, boating, and fishing.  He was passionate about all animals great and small and was at one point of the Board of Washington Human Society.  He was a consultant for Game commission for his expertise in handling and identifying snakes.  He would take his daughters on snake gathering forays to take in to show his students.  He left a lasting legacy to students, animals, and his family.

John is survived by his beloved daughters Kimberly (Scott) Anderson and Renee (Kevin) Urick; his loving grandchildren Leah and Kera Urick; his cherished brothers Michael (MeiLing) Cummings, Joseph Cummings, Jr., and Mark (Cindy) Cummings; and nieces and nephews Katlyn, Adam, Jason, Janine, Tim, and Katie.

Private arrangements were entrusted to Pittsburgh Cremation & Funeral Care, McMurray, PA. Memorial contributions in John’s name may be made to the Washington County Humane Society.
