93, of Bethel Park, passed away peacefully on September 26 with family at her side following a brief illness just several weeks shy of her 94th birthday. One of six children born to parents who immigrated to the United States from Germany in the early 1920s, Mary (who preferred “Liz” in adulthood), was raised in the Mt. Washington section of Pittsburgh and attended St. Justin’s school.
Married to the late Frank Edwards for 27 years, the two traveled widely together throughout the world, but always returned to her parents’ roots in Dinglesdorf, Germany to reconnect with family. But while the trips she made with husband, Frank, were filled with many great adventures, Liz always relished her annual trips to Myrtle Beach, Deep Creek, and the Outer Banks with her children and grandchildren.
Liz, an active member of St. Valentines Church, enjoyed playing the piano and singing in St. Valentine’s choir. During her work life, which spanned 60 years, she wore many hats, including, secretary for Pittsburgh Crane and Conveyor and health insurance administrator at Brookside Lumber in Bethel Park, from which she retired after 36 years at the age of 83.
Liz is survived by four children from a previous marriage to Jack C. Dooley: Jeffrey Dooley (Pat); Sandi Helbling (Gary); Sharon Dooley-Coltz (John); Mark Dooley (Loni); and their seven grandchildren Ryan Helbling (Michelle); Brandon Helbling; Rebecca Dooley; Alyssa Dutzer (Matt); Gregory Dooley (Jada); Kaylyn Kirgiss (Sam) and Abigail Coltz. As well as five great grandchildren: Petra and Demi Helbling, Liam, Cora, and Rhys Dutzer. Brother Paul Renz (Maryanne), sisters-in-law Lavern and Leona, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Liz is predeceased by her parents and by siblings Leo, Joseph, Bernard, and Margaret.
A memorial service will be held at St. Valentine Church, 2710 Ohio Street, Bethel Park, PA 15102 on Saturday October 19, 2024 at 10 a.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be given to the Brother’s Brother Foundation, 1200 Galveston Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15233. Website: https://brothersbrother.org/
