Norman Dale Sneed, age 83, of Sewickley, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 10, 2026.
A proud graduate of Quaker Valley High School’s Class of 1960, Dale honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1965 until 1972. Patriotic and hardworking, he carried that same dedication into every aspect of his life.
Dale grew up exploring the woods and waters surrounding Little Sewickley Creek, developing an early love and appreciation for nature that would remain with him throughout his life. As a young man, he worked alongside his father taking on countless jobs throughout Sewickley Heights. Whether clearing fallen trees after storms or assisting residents with waste removal and property upkeep, Dale became known for his dependable nature, strong work ethic, and personal touch that never went unnoticed.
His greatest passion was landscaping and horticulture. Dale possessed a remarkable gift for cultivating and restoring plant life, with an unmatched knowledge of grasses, flowers, soil conditions, temperate zones, invasive species, and plant diseases. Friends and neighbors often admired his extraordinary “green thumb,” and many sought his wisdom and expertise. He found great joy in creating beauty through nature and took immense pride in his work.
In his leisure time, Dale enjoyed spending time in New Cumberland, West Virginia, where he built a cabin overlooking the Ohio River — a place that brought him peace and reflected his lifelong connection to the outdoors.
He is survived by his loving children, Steven Sneed and his children, Allison and Steven; Heather Sneed and her daughter, Sydney; and Matthew (Janine) Sneed and his children, Jaxon and Maddox.
Heather and the family would also like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staffs of Asbury Heights and the VA in Aspinwall for the comfort, kindness, and exceptional care they provided to Dale.
A celebration of Dale’s life will be held at a later date.

I only met him once, but some people leave an impression in a single afternoon. He was the kind of man who could make you laugh while giving you his “wisdom” at the same time — cranky in the best possible way, full of stories, character, and a life clearly well lived. As a retired Marine, he carried a strength and presence that stood out immediately, but it was his humor that made the afternoon so memorable. I’m grateful I had the chance to sit, laugh, and listen to him for a while. Rest easy, sir.

I’m so sorry to hear this news. ND was a special man. He was a father figure to me when he lived in FWB. I spent a lot of time at their house and he was so kind, generous and tolerant of all of us teenagers that liked to hang out at their house! He always made us feel welcome. Love to all of the Sneeds! I spent the last three days reminiscing of the adventures and times that I have spent with N D after his daughter Heather told me of his passing. I’ve known Dale the better part of my adult life he was a dedicated to life and one of the hardest working men I ever met with unmatched sense of humor “indeed” When I say adventures, I never knew where we would end up once I got in that truck one thing is for sure at least take a toothbrush and gallon of water. We would go to the deep woods in mountains of West Virginia. Now I know why they call it wild and wonderful To Lexington, Kentucky hiked the woods back in the truck and head on home never any time to Waste!!! He was a man’s man. He was my friend and my brother whom I will miss dearly.Love you, brother Rest in peace, Norman Dale Sneed you deserve it indeed! Fred B.
