Novita Arlene Shealey, age 83, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2025. Born on August 16, 1942, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Laverne Barnes and Alfonzo Tolbert.
Novita attended Westinghouse High School and later went on to become a loving and devoted mother to Carmella J. Anderson and Kimberly Jean Duncan. She also cherished her role as a grandmother to her granddaughter, Jamale Jean Schubert, whom she raised as a daughter.
A loving sister, Novita is survived by her siblings Douglas Ray, Joe Douglas, and Regina Tolbert. She was preceded in death by her brothers Russell Oliver, Michael Oliver, and Albert Tolbert. Novita was a beloved grandmother to six grandchildren and mourned the untimely passing of her grandson Gabriel Luis Duncan, a loss she never fully overcame. She had eight great-grandchildren, and her family welcomed an additional great-grandson in November 2020 following one of her grandchildren’s marriages. To her delight she welcomed a great great grandson in 2016.
For over 20 years, Novita dedicated herself to work as an environmental specialist in downtown Pittsburgh. She formed a close bond with several co-workers that lasted for many years. Novita earned a certificate in child development and social work from the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC). A devoted member of St. Luke Church in the Hill District, she lived her life as a child of God. Choosing forgiveness over carrying resentments.
Novita was a loyal friend to the late Joyce Haynes and had a host of dear friends throughout her life. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Known for her kind spirit and infectious laugh, Novita was a firm believer in higher education and the importance of placing your trust in God.
She retired after 20 plus years and dedicated herself to her family, offering unconditional love, guidance, spiritual support, and warmth to all who knew her. Novita enjoyed reading her Bible, listening to gospel music, knitting, completing puzzles, and watching her favorite soap operas. Her devotion, love, and unwavering faith will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
