Rita Vargas passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at the age of 91 with her family by her side. She was born on May 11, 1930 in Oakland, Pittsburgh, PA.

Rita had a genuine, kind, and loving heart. She truly cared about the well being of those around her. Her sense of humor and smile will be remembered fondly as she always had quick wit and made everyone around her laugh. Rita was a wonderful storyteller and always offered thoughtful advice. Rita touched the lives of so many and her infectious personality will never be forgotten.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Rita was happiest when spending time with family and caring for pets, especially her dogs. She was a devoted Catholic and found solace through prayer, often praying to the Virgin Mary, St Jude, St Anthony, and Padre Pio.

Rita was a hard worker and had numerous jobs throughout her life. Most notably, she was a long-time employee of BNY Mellon in downtown Pittsburgh working for the loan department. She had impeccable cursive and a knack for writing notes. Rita spent her free time doing crossword puzzles (often cheating by asking family to look up the answers for her on the internet) and napping. She also enjoyed reading, particularly her tabloid magazines, and was always attentive to the latest celebrity news. Rita looked forward to reading the Sunday newspapers, cutting coupons, and saving recipes— she had an undeniable sweet tooth! Lastly, she loved music and would often be found dancing and singing throughout the house.

Rita was preceded in death by her mother, Caroline Visnic. She will be deeply missed by her six children, Christine (Joseph), Walnoha, Gary (Rachel) Taylor, Carol Vargas, Kenneth (Kathy) Vargas, Cynthia Vargas, and Christopher Vargas; her six grandchildren, Stephanie (Brian) Rosswog, Alyssa Patton, Samantha (Tyler) Thompson, Christian (Megan) Hutton, Koby and Kollin Vargas; as well as four great grandchildren, Annabelle Walnoha, Luke and Brooklyn Rosswog, Daisy Hutton; and her cousin, Eileen LaRocco.

The family has chosen to honor Rita’s life in a private celebration.
