Salvatore A. Ortenzo, age 91, of McMurray, PA, formerly of Penn Hills, PA, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, in his sleep at home with family on Friday, August 24, 2018. Born on December 7, 1926, he was the son of the late Elizabeth and Anthony Ortenzo. Beloved husband of Concetta “Connie” Ortenzo. Loving father of Janet Ortenzo, Anthony “Tony” (Cindy) Ortenzo, Carole Ortenzo, and Linda Ortenzo. Cherished grandfather to Michael, Claire, Dominic, and Grace Ortenzo. He was preceded in death by his siblings Dorothy Ortenzo, Rita (Thomas “Rocky”) Ortenzo Denne, and Robert (Betty) Ortenzo. He was also blessed with many nieces and nephews.

Sal was a devoted husband of nearly 66 years and a loving father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. A proud World War II Army veteran, he was a respected and admired business owner, baseball coach, and lifelong member of the Catholic faith.  He also was an avid bowler and sports fan. Sal inspired everyone he met with his decency, goodness, and generosity of spirit. He was a blessing to all who knew him and a light of our lives.

Family and friends are welcome on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 from 2 PM- 4 PM and 6 PM – 8 PM at Cremation and Funeral Care, 3287 Washington Road, McMurray, PA 15317. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at 10 AM at St. Benedict the Abbot, 120 Abington Drive, McMurray, PA 15317.

Sal is with all of the other angels from our families. I'm sure they were waiting to welcome him with open arms, but he will be greatly missed by all of us.

Sal was the epitome of graceful charm and seemingly inexhaustible energy. He made you happy just watching him be happy, and he had a way of putting a smile on your face that would barely add to the brilliance in the room that emanated from his. The world is a gloomier place with his passing, but still lit in our hearts by his memory. Rest easy

My sincere condolences to Mrs.Ortenzo, Janet, Tony, Carole, and Linda. I have the wonderful experience of knowing this family for 47 years and feel they are an extended family to me. Mr.Ortenzo was always so kind and welcoming to me and know he was a great and caring husband and family man and he will now be one of their guardian angels looking over all of his beloved family. Even though I cannot be there with you, I will be there in prayers, love, and spirit. God bless you all!

It is such a comfort to our family to see the lovely messages here. Dad was deeply loved by all of us who knew him. There are also many funny stories about him that we’ve been sharing today and would love to share with all of you as well in the coming days. For right now, I’d like to post the message I put into the PG Guest Book this morning. It’s addressed to Dad: “Dad, there is no way I can condense nearly 65 years of your love and care for me into this message, but what I feel, and what I have always felt, is overwhelming gratitude that I was born to you and Mom. The two of you were the first ones to teach me to love and have faith in God, and that family is always more important than any of the human issues that we live with every day. Because of you and Mom, our family has always been a source of joy, strength, laughter, faith, and love for your children, grandchildren, friends, and all who knew you. I wish that all of the children I worked with in my 40 years as a Catholic educator could have known the kind of family life that we had, and still have. I will never have the words to thank you and Mom for dedicating your nearly-66 years of marriage to providing a faith-filled, loving home to all of our family and friends, but know that I will always love you very much and that I am forever grateful.”

“Uncle Sal” is a old family name where a come from. As an old, close friend of Mike Denne, Sal’s nephew, I’ve known him personally and vicariously through the many tails told by mike. Uncle Sal was always a kind gentleman whom I always enjoyed. My peace be with you all in this time of great loss.

My deepest sympathy is extended to the Ortenzo family, especially Carole whom I have come to know. Our deep condolences to you Tony, Cindy and the entire family. Our thoughts are with you these days. We didn‘t know Sal on a personal level, but aged 91, his life surely was rich and fulfilled. So being an Italian, it might be appropriate to paraphrase Michelangelo on Sal‘s behalf: I am not dead. I‘m just changing rooms. I live within you. And walk through your dreams.

"So every good tree bears good fruit" Sincere condolences to you, Janet. I never knew your father, but I'm certain he is a good, Godly man. "for the tree is known by its fruit." May God continue to bless your father, and your family.

I was so privileged to have worked for Sal when I was in high school and college. He was a great teacher and very kind. I will always remember him as one of the greatest bosses I ever had.
