Steve passed away recently, at the age of 31, after a long battle with an eating disorder. He grew up in Mt. Lebanon as the happy, healthy, youngest child of Ed and Kathy Metz. His parents, along with his older brother Kevin and sister Kaitlin, happily welcomed him into their existing family. With a relaxed and outgoing personality, Steve was equally comfortable with his own peer group, his siblings’ friends, and even his “older” parents.

Steve excelled in the academic world, from his years at Foster Elementary School, Mellon Middle School, and Mt. Lebanon High School. He graduated in 2011 with Highest Honors. He attended the University of Pittsburgh with a full-tuition academic scholarship, double majoring in Math and Statistics, and graduated in 2015 Summa Cum Laude. In order to pursue his passion for cooking, he worked as a Line Cook at Butcher and the Rye for the next several months. In 2016 he accepted a position as an Actuarial Analyst with the Manhattan office of Milliman, an International Actuarial Consulting firm, and moved to Brooklyn, New York. He returned to Pittsburgh in late 2019, continuing to work remotely for Milliman. He passed multiple actuarial exams and was awarded his Associate Actuarial Certification in 2023. Still having a love for food culture, he took a month to travel to Vietnam, Thailand, South Korea, and Japan to experience their cuisine in person. Then, looking to expand his academics, he was in the process of completing an undergraduate degree in Computer Science.

Steve was humble, unselfish, a loyal friend, and a loving son, brother, and uncle. He is survived by his heartbroken parents, brother, sister, nephew Brandon, and niece Lili. Also, his Aunt Julie and Uncle Tom, and cousins Mitchell and Lauren. It is said that Heaven is where you get to see every dog you ever loved again. We hope that his dog Reagan is with him now. Steve wasn’t perfect, but he always tried. We will miss him forever!
