William A. Mitchell
June 1, 1945 – May 3, 2025
William A. Mitchell, son of Clark N. Mitchell and Nancy Theurer, and a lifelong resident of Washington, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on June 1, 1945, in Washington, Bill lived a life marked by devotion to family, service to the law, and an unwavering passion for Penn State football.
Bill graduated from Washington & Jefferson College in 1968, where he was a proud and active member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He went on to earn his Juris Doctor from The University of Akron School of Law in 1971. His legal career began at Weirton Steel Mill, where he served as Associate Counsel, before being appointed Assistant District Attorney for Washington County in 1974.
In 1975, Bill co-founded the law firm Mitchell & Mitchell Associates with his brother, Clark A. Mitchell. He later established his own successful private practice, Mitchell and Associates, where he dedicated decades to serving the legal needs of his community. Bill was a former member of both the Washington County Bar Association and the Pennsylvania Bar Association.
Outside the courtroom, Bill was the ultimate family man and a legendary jokester whose humor and warmth filled every room. He was a lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and an avid music lover—especially of the Bee Gees. Bill loved spending time with his family, always enjoying their company, especially when gathered around the dinner table sharing laughter and Marsha’s home-cooked meals.
Penn State football was Bill’s greatest passion. He followed every article, listened to every podcast, and rewatched games like he was coaching from the couch. His enthusiasm for the Nittany Lions was contagious, making every game day an experience filled with cheers, strong opinions, and a whole lot of heart.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife Marsha Mitchell, whom he was happily married to for 55 years. His brother Clark A. Mitchell and sister-in-law Maryellen; his children: William “Jock” Mitchell (Amy Mitchell), Tara Mitchell (Bill Lee), Jarrod Mitchell (Renee Allen), and Marin “Boo Boo” Mitchell (Scott Mounts). His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Hannah Palone (Sage Grego), Hailey Doctor (Xavier Doctor), Jake Mitchell (Morgan Geer), Kaleigh Faldowski, Brailyn Mitchell, Josh Mitchell, and Katie Mitchell; as well as his great-grandchildren: Asher Grego and Jalen Doctor—with a great-granddaughter on the way. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bill’s life was one of dedication, laughter, and love. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His memory will live on through his family, his friends, and every time the blue and white take the field.
We Are… forever grateful for you, Willie.
A private service will be held for the family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you wear your favorite Penn State gear and share a story in Bill’s honor. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Gretz, Peters Township Rehabilitation, Concordia Hospice of Washington, and Dr. Minteer for their excellent care.
