Richard Anthony Happ passed away on January 21, 2024, at the age of 85 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was born on February 10, 1938, in Bellevue, PA. Dick was a devoted husband, father, and friend, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.

Dick is survived by his loving wife, Christine Happ, and his children: Mark (Tracie) Happ, Kirstan (Andre) Boettger, Suzy (Chris) Happ, Erik (Carolyn) Happ, Carrie (Gabe) Happ-Smith, Meghan (John) Sluga, and Justin (Tori) Happ. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Happ, his mother, Marcella Happ, his sister, Martha Preston, and his brother, Frank Happ.

Brenda Happ, his former spouse, also preceded him in death.

After graduating from North Catholic High School, Dick pursued his higher education at the University of Pittsburgh and St. Francis College, where he completed his undergraduate studies. He then attended Hahnemann Medical College, where he obtained his MD degree in 1966. Dick proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1971 to 1973. His service and dedication to his country, inspired several of his children to also volunteer for military service.

Following his military service, Dick embarked on a highly successful career as a colorectal surgeon. He dedicated his professional life to surgical innovation, started the Rupert B. Turnbull Colorectal Residency Program and always provided compassionate care to his patients. He left a lasting impact on the medical community.

Outside of his work, Dick had a lifelong passion for boating. His family enjoyed countless memories on the three rivers around Pittsburgh before Dick moved his boat, The Proctodynia, to the Chesapeake Bay. He was always happiest there taking great joy in the serenity and beauty of the being on the water.

A ceremony celebrating Dick’s life will be held on February 10, 2024, at 10 am, at Resurrection Parish – St. Thomas More Church.

Friends, family, and all whose lives were touched by Dick are invited to attend and pay their respects.

Dick will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for his family will forever be remembered. May he rest in peace, knowing that his legacy lives on in the hearts of those who loved him.
