James “Jim” Matthias McDonough (72), of South Park Township, died on June 3, 2022. Jim was the son of the late Verna and Matthias McDonough and brother of Catherine Langston, Robert McDonough, and the late Thomas McDonough. He is survived by his niece Brianna McDonough, his nephews Theo Langston and Stephen Langston, his great-niece and nephews, and his many dear friends.

From his early experiences as a Boy Scout and the first Eagle Scout of Troop 86 in Monroeville, Jim loved the outdoors. He was a 1967 graduate of Gateway High School and received his BA degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1971. After studying law briefly, he was commissioned as an officer in the Marine Corps, serving overseas in Japan as an artillery officer. He commanded the Marine small arms ranges on Okinawa, likely contributing to his lifelong love of recreational and practical shooting sports. Jim generously shared his time and skills with friends and family alike with visits to gun ranges. After discharge from the Marines, he earned an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh and worked as a corporate finance executive and as a small business consultant. After working in Williamsport PA and Quincy IL he returned to Pittsburgh for the remainder of his life.

He was active in the Allegheny County Republican Party. He was known for his historical understanding, humorous anecdotes, and positive attitude. He contributed his time to assisting formerly incarcerated individuals’ reentry to society. His lifelong commitment to physical fitness did not prevent him being an excellent cook and baker, renowned for his pies.

Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of Jim’s life. Complete this form to be contacted when arrangements have been made.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Semper Fi Fund. If you would like the family to be notified of your contribution, please add the McDonough family mailing address of PO Box 40197, Pittsburgh, PA 15201.
