Dorothy DeWitt Watts, age 98 of Mt. Lebanon, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on August 26, 2020. A native of Summit, New Jersey, she was born on October 2, 1921.  She was the daughter of Dorothy and Henry Clinton DeWitt, Jr..

Dedicated and loving mother of Tia Watts, Mark (Tia) Watts, Lila (Larry) Prezioso, Diane (Larry) Lehman and the late Richard Watts; cherished grandmother of Nick, Lia, James, Tyler, Kenny and Marie; and dear sister of the late Henry Clinton DeWitt III.

After graduating from Montclair College, she went on to do what very few females did in the 1930’s, advanced to and completed a master’s program in mathematics at the prestigious Northwestern University, earning her degree in 1946. During this time she worked on a secret project for the US military, discovering after the war was over that her brother was working on the same project.

She was many things. A college math professor (mostly at Community College of Beaver County) and relentless advocate for education, a musician who played the string bass in several community orchestras, a cat lover, a wife and proof reader to her late husband, Alan Watts. After their divorce, she became a strong single mother raising 5 children in the 1960s, a grandmother, a lover of classical music, an active nature enthusiast, a bookworm, and a force to be reckoned with.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Animal Friends or Angels For the Elderly.

I only wish that you and your past lover Alan Watts, may intertwine your energy, and send some of those learnings that you both endured to myself and others that are always learning and understanding more. Good energy to you and who you meet in your next adventure!!!
