Shirley P. (Pat) Stein passed away on April 22, 2024 at age 94. Pat loved springtime, sunshine on her face, and flowers, making it fitting that she left this life on a beautiful Earth Day.
Pat was born in Waynesburg, PA on September 23, 1929 and spent most of her life in the Pittsburgh area, with her final years at Friendship Village. She excelled at gardening, baking cookies, and making people smile. Above all, she loved her role as the mother of five children and wife of Richard Stein, who loved her dearly in return before his passing in 1988.

As Pat’s children, some of our most treasured memories include Sunday dinners together (Mom always insisted on the good china), picnics at Raccoon State Park, Christmas mornings (when we had to wait until she had a chance to brush her hair and her teeth before we could go downstairs), seeing Mom and Dad dressed up to attend Pittsburgh Symphony concerts, and spending time with her grandchildren and friends. Pat enjoyed reading a great book and singing in the choir. She could spend hours doing crossword puzzles, playing Scrabble, and discussing current events. She was progressive for a woman born in the 1920s, and she passed that passion on to her children.

Pat is survived by her children, Susan (Pat), Erich (Polly), Chris (Robin), Laura (Steve), and Emily (Scott). She was also blessed with seven grandchildren, including Andrew, Matthew, Anna, Max, Jenny, Ben, and Charlie; great-grandchildren Clara, William, and Henry. Pat is also survived by her beloved brother Noel.
Arthritis, dementia, and several falls made the last few years challenging, but Pat never failed to make a joke or give a hug to those she loved. Her children are happy to know that her soul is now at peace and free of pain, and that she is now reunited with Dick, the love of her life. It is comforting to picture Pat and Dick walking hand in hand down a dirt road in Blackwater Falls, West Virginia, where they spent many beautiful weekends together as a family and to imagine Dad saying “I’m so glad you finally made it. What took you so long?”
A celebration of life will be held later this spring in Pittsburgh.
In lieu of flowers, contributions would be welcome at Gateway Hospice, 9380 McKnight Road, Pittsburgh PA 15237 or Global Peace Building Foundation, 370 Castle Shannon Blvd, PO Box 14804 Pittsburgh PA 15234
