Joseph John Hensler (1946–2024): A Life of Service, Community, and Family

Joe Hensler, born on June 27, 1946 to Rose Sarachman and Norman Hensler, raised in Carrick, PA, passed away on April 22, 2024. His life was marked by dedication, service, and a deep love for his family and community.

In his youth, Joe attended St. Basil’s and developed a passion for baseball. His talent on the field caught the attention of the Yankees organization, but his father prioritized education, and Joe headed to the University of Cincinnati. Joe also had a love of music and became known as the “Wax Master,” while spinning tunes during college at a local radio station (WFIB 40). Later, he completed his education at Duquesne University.

Joe’s commitment to service extended to our country. He proudly served for six years, first in the Army and then in the Air Force International Guard. His love for community led him to hold significant roles, including President of the Eighty Four, PA Chamber of Commerce and President of the Scholarship Foundation for Canon McMillan School District. He also coached various sports, supporting his children’s athletic endeavors.

Throughout his career, Joe worked for several companies, including Sears, RB&W, Pfizer, Ametek, Zee Medical, and Cintas. Remarkably, he continued working until he was just two months shy of 76.

Joe’s faith was central to his life. For years, he served as an usher at St. Patrick’s Church in Canonsburg, PA. His involvement extended beyond the church walls. You could find him at the Muse Club, helping the ladies cook tripe and make sauce for spaghetti fundraisers. He also frequented the Ukrainian church in Carnegie, enjoying breakfast with volunteers as they prepared pierogis for Lent.

Joe was also an avid bowler, having competed in matches on local TV and eventually in adult leagues on a team proudly known as The Joe’s. He also had an affinity for collecting baseball cards, records and hats.

Survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Antonia Hensler, Joe leaves behind a legacy of love and service. His children, Bradley (Daesha) Hensler, Derrek (Kerri) Hensler, and Kendall Hensler, along with seven grandchildren, Madison, Caden, Morgan, Delanie, Harper, Lane and Hudson will forever cherish his memory. Joe is also survived by siblings Kathi (Leo) Manz, Richard (Sue) Hensler, John (Diane) Hensler.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Mark.

Prior to his passing, Joe spent several weeks at Washington Hospital. His wife and family are grateful for the care and attention that he received from the entire staff. Joe Hensler’s impact on his community, his dedication to family, and his unwavering commitment to service will be remembered by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.

Dear Toni, Kendall, Derrek, Brad and families, Please accept my deepest condolences. I am so sadden to see this. You all were such a huge, significant part of my life for such a long time. I feel so lucky that Joe played a big role in that and that he was a part of my life. I especially admire his ability to always try to put a smile on someone’s face no matter how goofy it was and he always had a smile on his. I think of him often as I’m flipping pancakes and remembering the mornings I spent having breakfast with you all because he made the best pancakes hands down. I will be praying for an abundance of love and comfort for you all in this time. You all are always in my heart and I’m always thinking of you fondly and sending my love your way.
Ernesto
