Glenn William Broman

Glenn William Broman, 77, of Mount Lebanon, PA, passed away on September 26, 2020 at Arden Courts Memory Care Community. He was born in McKeesport, PA on December 14, 1942 and is the son of the late Elmer and Catherine Broman (nee Llewellyn).  He is survived by his wife Claudia (nee Metzner) and his two children from a previous marriage to Francine Carlson, daughter Lynn Marie Broman of Chesapeake, VA, and son Paul William Broman of Bethel Park, PA. He is the eldest brother of Kerwin (Jane); Marsha (Antonio) Gutierrez; Elaine Scott; and the late Wayne Broman. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

Glenn was a graduate of McKeesport High School and attended Pennsylvania State University, where he earned a B.S. degree in History in 1965. He was involved in several extracurricular activities that would help lay part of the foundation of his eventual career, including: membership in the “Hi-Y Club” and “Science Club” during his high school years. In his early years as a PSU undergraduate, he was a member of the “Intercollegiate Conference on Government” where he served as a delegate to the state convention in Harrisburg in 1962. Also as an undergrad, he was the Sports Editor for the McKeesport Campus’ newspaper; a seasonal general laborer at United States Steel’s Irvin Works; as janitor at the Agricultural Library at University Park; and as both the head of maintenance/grounds and camp counselor at Camp Lutherlyn in Prospect, PA. He completed his student teaching assignment at West Mifflin Area School District in the spring of 1965 and was hired a few months later by the Baldwin-Whitehall School District as a secondary teacher for Baldwin High School. A few of his early years at Baldwin included extracurricular work as an assistant director of the “Heatherettes.”  While teaching at Baldwin High School, he enrolled in the master’s program at the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned his Master of Arts in Education (Secondary Education) in 1969. Years later, he enrolled in Duquesne University’s master’s program and earned a Master of Arts in History in 1982. During his 32-year career at Baldwin, he taught grades 10 -12 and the subjects Social Science, Social Studies, American History, World Cultures, American Cultures and AP American history. Glenn retired in June of 1997.

Glenn lived a full, rich life.  He loved being a father, an uncle, and a brother. He had many interests, including a passion for history and keeping up with current events and he was an enthusiastic fan of Pitt and PSU as well as the Steelers and Penguins. Above all his interests was his love of music.  He was a proud member of the bass section of the Bach Choir of Pittsburgh and its president for four years. His license plate even read “BACH GUY.” It was his love of music that brought his wife Claudia into his life while both were singing with the Berkshire Choral Festival. Singing in this Festival became an annual summer tradition for them.

Glenn will be remembered for his kindness and thoughtfulness. He felt strongly about the needs of others and was a regular and generous contributor to numerous social causes. Glenn was also very well known for his spontaneous humor and had a knack for finding humor in an otherwise ordinary or embarrassing situation. While he struggled with Parkinson’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia during the last few years of his life, he never lost his sense of humor, often provoking peals of laughter by his caregivers.

The family would like to give a special and very heartfelt “Thank You!” to the Arden Courts Memory Care Community and Vitas Hospice for their warm, professional, and exceptional care of Glenn. True to his love of ice cream, his caregivers could often liven him up with a large bowl of ice cream or a root beer float. So in memory of Glenn, please enjoy a large bowl of ice cream or a root beer float.

Friends are welcomed Saturday, October 10, 2020 from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm followed by a private family service at Pittsburgh Cremation and Funeral Care, 3287 Washington Road, McMurray, PA 15317.  724-260-5546. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 25 visitors will be allowed at a time and face masks or coverings are required.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to Bach Choir of Pittsburgh or Parkinson Foundation of Western PA.
