Barbara Deane (Austin) Price, daughter of Richard E. Austin and Florence M. (Rickert) Austin, was born into this world on November 4, 1944, and departed it on October 16, 2023. She was the mother of Jack (1969-1988) and Stephen price, and grandmother to Jack Oliver.

She held a BA from The College of Wooster, an MA from The University of Texas Austin, an MSED from Duquesne University, and a PsyD from The University of Southern California School of Professional Studies. She furthered her education with travel in Europe and South America and then as a resident of Montevideo, Uruguay and Mexico City.

Barbara worked for many years as a teacher, translator, and mental health and addictions professional in Pennsylvania, California, and Alaska. She was ordained as an Episcopal Deacon, and after additional studies, a Deacon in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, serving in Nenana, Alaska and in Fairbanks, Alaska.

She hoped that heaven was a place she would reach and that it would be “the place where all the dogs you have ever loved come to greet you.” Assuredly, added to that multitude would be the assorted rescued birds and cats, well fed squirrels and woodchucks, all recipients of her ministrations.

Barbara leaves behind little of material value, but some fine, oft-told stories and her beloved surviving son, whom she called “my gift to the world: a good and honorable and loving man.” She leaves him in the care of his well-loved wife, Natasha (Korshin) and their gem of a son, Jack Oliver Price. Oh… and she also leaves a great recipe for ginger molasses cookies (available upon request.)

Having engaged in a somewhat risky and adventurous life, she chose this epitaph: She did it the hard way and left smiling.

All services will be private. Arrangements were entrusted to Pittsburgh Cremation and Funeral Care Robinson Township.

Barbara was my mentor, colleague, and dear friend. When she called to "say goodbye" she said "I will see you on the other side and we will have coffee." Godspeed Barbara, fair winds and following seas.
