Henry Joseph “Hank” Mullen

Age 90, of Pittsburgh, passed away peacefully at home on August 8, 2022. Born on August 14, 1931, he was one of the sons of the late Mary and Joseph Mullen. Loving father of Laura Lynn Mullen and Ryan Henry Mullen; grandfather of Taylor Victoria Bell and Brooke Mullen Schreiber; brother of Mary Jo Mullen; also survived by many nieces and nephews. Hank was a stockbroker, working most of his life in Pittsburgh and also working a few years on Wall Street in New York.

Hank made his start in the brokerage business with Singer Deane & Scribner in 1960. Before long, he became head of the trading department, greatly increasing the firms production. Then following the departure of one of the partners and 3 other colleagues, he left to work for a small brokerage firm C.S. McKee and Company in 1966. With C.S. McKee’s new management structure underway in its early stages, Hank kept the firm afloat for years before they had enough salesmen hired bringing in adequate commissions.

Both after the promotion at Singer and the startup at C.S. McKee, when Hank would tell the stories of these early years, he would say “I made them so much money in the first 2-3 years, they couldn’t believe it.” Compared to what they were used to, the firm partners were truly astonished with what the new younger broker on the scene was able to do for their firms.

As one of the key producers growing both firms, Hank quickly became a well known name around Pittsburgh, sparking interest and offers from other brokerages around the city to go work for them. He went to work in New York in the early 1970s through the rollout of NASDAQ, and then worked at many other firms when returning to Pittsburgh including Hornblower & Weeks, Thomson McKinnon, PaineWebber, Janney Montgomery Scott, among others. Hank was truly one of the pioneers who helped lay the groundwork for what the investment advisement business became today, through many industry changes.
Hank belonged to the Bond Club of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Stock Traders Association. He also belonged to the Pittsburgh Press Club.

He had a love for aviation and a good scotch. He was a veteran who was drafted to the Army, serving during The Korean War later he graduated from Penn State University.
