John T. Schaefer, age 73 of Mt. Lebanon and formerly of Rock-Rock Rockaway Beach, NY, which he would frequently remind us The Ramones sang about, lost his battle with Leukemia on October 30, 2023. It might have been his NY upbringing that led his youngest son’s friends to refer to him as Tony Soprano and his oldest’s to say he was the dad that could beat up all our dads.

We were lucky that John wooed Helen Larkin Schaefer on the dance floor in Breezy Point, NY, later leading to 47 years of marriage. He would say 38 years of wedded bliss out of 47 isn’t bad.

Loving father and fierce fantasy football adversary of Tim (Cathleen) Schaefer of Potomac, MD and Gerard (Kara) Schaefer of Bethel Park, he was proud to call himself the reigning 2022 champion of The Bosses Think We Are Working fantasy football league. He will forever be remembered as a fierce competitor and champion. But above all else, he was most proud of his grandkids Kyle, Connor, Mackenzie, Charlie, and Chloe Schaefer, who lovingly referred to him as “Pop Johnny.” “I just love those kids so much” was more often than not his comment after Facetime calls.

John, a tough, caring, loving, unapologetic fantasy football champion will be forever missed and remembered.

Family and friends are welcome Friday, November 3, 2023 from 4-8 pm at Pittsburgh Cremation & Funeral Care, 3287Washington Rd., McMurray, PA 15317, 724-260-5546.  A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 9:30 am at St. Paul the Cross- Saint Anne Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s hospital http://Stjude.org and Light of Life Rescue Mission http://Give.lightoflife.org

Hello. I worked with John at Expedia and Amex. We respectfully called him the GOVERNOR! He was a dear friend and will be missed by all. His wit was always present as well as his brutal honesty:)! He was loved and will be missed by all. Obviously, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I will not be able to make it up for the service due to a prior commitment but I will be thinking of all of you. All my love. Phil Stiles

Tim, I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts, prayers and love are with you and all the Schaefer family during your time of grieving. I am bringing your intentions with me to Medjugorje Friday so will be saddened to miss your pops service. Be at peace. Your dad has not gone away, he has gone home.

Dear Schaefer Family, I want to express my sympathy to you all during this very sad time. I came to know John as a Teammate on the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation 50/50 Raffle. He had been there much longer than I, and was a wonderful Mentor to me in how to make every Fan Engagement a success. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and was so good with the public! He spoke often, with love and pride, of your Family, and will certainly be missed. Sincerely, Kathleen Miller

Schaefer Family, I am so sorry for your loss. Last year I worked the 50/50 raffle with John. Unfortunately, we were only assigned to the same area twice, but memories of him bring a smile to my face. He was so kind. I appreciated how he asked about my one year old and I loved to hear about his family. He talked about the holidays and how it was crazy (in a good way) at the house with all of the people (and dogs!). It was obvious how much he loved all of you. I’m thankful I got to know him if only for a short time. Sincerely, Kelly Lehman
