Francis Richard Cortes, 89, of Upper St. Clair, passed away peacefully, on October 24, 2023, with his family by his side. Richard was born on November 27, 1933 to the late Ralph and Joann (Midili) Cortes.
Loving husband of 56 years to Gerry (Zandier) Cortes.
Beloved father to Jill (Michael) Chlystek, Susan Cortes, Matthew (Loire) Cortes, John (Cara) Cortes, and Janet (Tim) Henderson. Cherished grandfather to Marlee, Samuel, and Maya Chlystek; Matthew and Luke Mitchell; Alex, Dominic, and Gino Cortes; Emmy Cortes; Jonas Wells and Isla Henderson. Brother to Ronald (Carole) Cortes and the late Mary Ellen (John) Luchok. Brother-in-law to David (Sharon) Zandier. He was also blessed with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Richard graduated from Mount Lebanon High School in 1951, earned a degree In Metallurgical Engineering from Carnegie Tech in 1955, and was a Veteran Marine. Richard and his brother, and later his two sons and nephew, carried on the Cortes Builders’ legacy, constructing custom homes throughout the Pittsburgh area for over 55 years. Richard was a devout Catholic and long-time member of St. Louise de Marillac parish where he was actively involved with Eucharistic Adoration, men’s retreats, and the Men’s Fish Fry.
Always ready to share a cigar and a laugh with his buddies, friends will remember him for his sense of humor. He delighted in watching his grandchildren in their various sports/activities, spending holidays with family, and yearly trips to Hilton Head Island.
In addition to his devotion to Jesus, Richard dedicated his life to providing for his family. He will always be a role model for his children and grandchildren for his faith, work ethic, and generosity. Though our hearts are breaking from our loss, what a wonderful welcome it must have been for him in Heaven.
Family and friends are welcome for visitation on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Pittsburgh Cremation & Funeral Care, 3287 Washington Rd., McMurray, PA 15317, (724) 260-5546.
