Mrs. Janice Kroffe, age 77, of Danville, Virginia, passed away at her residence on July 21, 2020, from complications due to COPD.

Born May 11, 1943, in Pittsburgh, PA, Jan was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School and Danville Memorial School of Nursing. She was retired from Duke University Hospital, where she was a Registered Nurse for many years.

She was a devoted mother who always made time for her children and worked to help other children as well. Friends and family alike would be the lucky recipients of unexpected care packages: food, treats, kitchen gadgets, blankets, books, and a hand-written note of encouragement and support.

Jan was nearly as devoted to the Pittsburgh Steelers as she was to her children.  On Sundays, it was understood by all family members  not to call during the game, and by her son Mark to be prepared for a flurry of text messages or phone calls about a particular call or spectacular play.

A woman who shopped for Christmas presents for her family all year long, but detested wrapping them so much that she often waited until late in the evening on Christmas Eve, she occasionally brought her youngest son into the wrapping melee just before family arrived to celebrate the holiday.

Jan inherited a love of watching things grow from summers spent with her Grandpa Luse, who had a small farm outside of Cleveland, Ohio. She shared this passion with her family who, willingly or perhaps reluctantly, helped her to create the beautiful gardens surrounding her home in Danville, Virginia.

Mrs. Kroffe is survived by her children William Woodside III, Mark Kroffe, and Kerry Kroffe; grandchildren, Megan Kroffe and Kirsten Kroffe; and siblings Lee Weisenbacher and Heidi Weisenbacher Krueger.

Graveside service will be conducted at Forest Lawn Gardens in McMurray, Pennsylvania, on Thursday, July 30.

I was a classmate of Jan and my most memorable memory of her is sharing the Pirates winning the pennant in 1960, It was a day game and we were in school and she and I celebrated in the hall at TJ.. She was a great person and much fun. My sympathy. Paula Miller Bowman
