William (Bill) Nagel Maher

William (Bill) Nagel Maher, son of Isabel and William A. Maher, born in Detroit Michigan on March 11, 1926, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2018 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania where he and his wife of 40 years, Mary Lou (Mullen), have lived for the last few years.

Beloved husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, and uncle, this energetic warm hearted playful man enjoyed sharing his zest for life through teachable moments and time with family. Father of Bil (Maria) Maher, Timothy (Yeshe) Maher, Bonnie (Tom) Sak, Brian (Christy Rector), Mary (Daniel) Hayes, Melissa (Michael) Samuel and the late Michael (Luo Ying) Maher and fforest Maher; Mother of Maher children Gloria (Grady), Stepfather of J.R. (Linda Eremita) Mullen, Cindy (Daniel Hustad) Mullen and Suzanne (Antanas) Shurna; Grandfather to Nadia, Melissa, Nathan, Kelly, Ryan, Kyle, Charles, Michael, Sharon, Jimmy, Lindsay, John and Laura, as well as six great grandchildren.

Following graduation from the University of Detroit Jesuit High School, Bill served in the U.S. Air Force in 1944 and 1945; subsequently earning his B.S. Degree from the University of Detroit. He joined Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation for 25 years as a sales and marketing executive to the automotive industry. After moving to Muskegon, MI, he was employed by Lorin Industries utilizing his aluminum expertise. He was an active member of the Muskegon Y’s Club (YMCA) serving as president, and was dedicated about raising funds for scholarships for children to attend Camp Pendalouan via the annual White Elephant sale. He also volunteered for the West Michigan Symphony, the Muskegon Museum of Art and in earlier years, Focus Hope in Detroit. Bill was an avid baker and Master Gardener. Sailing Lake Michigan with family for 20 years brought joy to his life as did membership at the White Lake Yacht Club in Whitehall, MI, and travels to Europe, Australia, Asia, and South America.

A Funeral Mass is planned for Thursday, October 4, 2018 at 10 am at Saint Simon & Jude, 1603 Greentree Rd. Pittsburgh PA.  Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be sent to:
Camp Pendalouan, Muskegon YMCA, MI; Focus Hope Detroit, MI; UPMC Family Hospice, Pittsburgh PA.

Reading these beautiful tributes, we can say that Bill lived and loved life and was a source of inspiration to those around him. I offer my deepest condolences to the Maher and Mullen families on this sad occasion.
