I've known & admired Jialu since he arrived here to study at Pitt in the 1980s. I have been his friend for decades ever since, as have others in the department. He survived difficult times during the Cultural Revolution, and found his free voice here. I visited with him only a day or two before his death: He had for some time explained that his death was imminent, but he spoke without apparent pain and with great clarity, displaying to me a draft will about what he wanted for his wife. A brave and good man who lived a life all of us should emulate. My entire family enjoyed our time with you and Shuying, Jialu. We we ALL miss you.
