John Charles Potts from Gibsonia, PA passed away after a brief illness on Friday, September 8, 2023. He was 89 years old and lived a beautiful, full life. John was raised in Avalon, PA and loved playing basketball. He was part of the Avalon high school team that won a state title in 1952, with an undefeated record of 29-0. Following high school, John served in the Army during the Korean War. Upon finishing his tour of duty, John attended Carnegie Tech and married the love of his life, Marian Elizabeth Zehr in 1960, at Assumption Church in Bellevue, PA. Together they raised a family as John was building a career in the engineering and design group at PPG Industries Inc. (Pittsburgh Plate Glass). John was awarded a United States process patent for manufacturing flat glass and was so well respected by his colleagues at PPG, they called him back after several years of retirement to help them bring up another series of float glass plants around the world.

John was a loving and caring husband to Marian as they remained happily married for 63 years. And John was a dedicated and outstanding father to four children. He will be remembered for making himself available to help and offer support to his children and grandchildren for sixty years. For his children, he coached sports, taught auto mechanics, provided moral support, offered sound advice, and helped with home projects (painting, plumbing, carpentry – whatever the need). When grandchildren arrived, he attended ballet, ice skating, swimming, band, piano, theatrical, and choir performances; and cheered on his grandchildren at their t-ball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, basketball, football, and softball games, as well as their lacrosse, golf, and tennis matches.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Marian; his children John Gregory Potts (Heather Gresh), Laurie Ann Foster (Edmund), Janice Crookshank (Daniel), and Stephen Potts (Heather Whitefield); his grandchildren Jack Potts, Tanner Potts, Alexandra Foster, Kate Foster, Abigail Crookshank, Andrey Crookshank, Zachary Crookshank, Kalina Potts, Tristan Potts, and Tyler Potts; and many nieces and nephews.

We would like to thank Gallagher Hospice for their exceptional care during his final days.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at St. Mark the Evangelist Parish formerly Saint Kilian Church, 7076 Franklin Rd. Cranberry Twp. PA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic Charities of Pittsburgh  https://www.ccpgh.org
