Alice Bowser Hickey (1946-2023)

A beloved wife, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and aunt. Alice Bowser Hickey, 77, of Pittsburgh, PA, died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, October 29th, 2023.

Alice was born in Kansas City, MO in 1946 to John and Wendela Bowser. As a girl, Alice enjoyed days of fun and laughter with her siblings John, Jim, Ann, and Ruth. Their home was one of excitement, joy, and love. Alice attended Westport High School before studying Physical Education at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Kentucky in Louisville, KY and her Master’s Degree at the University of Memphis in Memphis, TN. Alice worked as a Physical Education teacher for many years and was beloved by her students and school community for her positive energy and work ethic.

Alice met the love of her life, Martin Dan Hickey, during a night out with friends at the University of Kansas. From the day they met, they were inseperable. Excited to start their lives together, the two were married on June 15th, 1968. Alice and Dan welcomed their son John Martin Hickey (Jack) in 1975, followed by their son Charles Thomas Hickey (Chuck) in 1977. The family moved around the world following Dan’s career as an endodontist with the US Navy, spending time in Italy, Alaska, and many other locations across the United States.

Alice embraced the role of grandmother. Though her two grandsons lived far away, she treasured her time with them and loved being their “Mimi”. She enjoyed face timing with them and planning wonderful family vacations where she could shower them with affection in person.

Alice had many activities and hobbies. An avid crafter, she created quilts and stained glass windows as gifts for family and friends. You knew Alice loved you when she gave you one of her beautiful masterpieces. Alice enjoyed cooking, Ceili dancing, entertaining, and spending time with her dogs. She was also an active member of the Democratic Party and often devoted her time and energy to their causes.

Alice will be remembered for her conscientious and consistent approach to life and her knack for giving good practical advice and counsel. We could not have asked for a better wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt and will miss her every day. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who knew and loved her.

Alice was preceded in death by her mother, father, and her brother John. She is survived by her husband Dan, her sons Jack (Jayde) and Chuck (Stacy), her grandsons Brendan and Sammy, her sisters Ann and Ruth, her brother Jim (Joan), nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Alice’s Celebration of Life will be held in August, 2024. Donations to The Salvation Army P.O. Box 5228 Traverse City, MI 49696 in Alice’s name would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.

What a wonderful woman who touched countless lives with her spunky spirit and caring soul. I’m so deeply sorry for your loss and though it had been far too long since I had the honor of her presence, she will be remembered fondly.

In it something is. Many thanks for an explanation, now I will not commit such error.
